a missions internship and semester abroad experience for seniors |
What Every Missionary Needs
If you’re considering becoming a missionary, there are probably two things you desire: God’s guidance and practical training. Participating in SAFARI (Semester Abroad for a Radical Impact) will give you an opportunity to gain both.
SAFARI is a partnership between World Missions Ministries, Emmanuel College, Southwestern Christian University, and Holmes Bible College. Through SAFARI, you’ll have the opportunity to gain the academic, spiritual, and social preparation you need for a missionary career.
Social Preparation
An important part of training for a missionary career is gaining the cross-cultural and other social skills you need to succeed. SAFARI will allow you to develop some of the needed relationship skills even before you leave for South Africa, as you’ll gain experience in raising support by asking friends and family to help with your financial needs.
Once you arrive in South Africa, you’ll be immersed in another culture for four months, allowing you to learn some of the language and build relationships with people who follow other religions. You’ll participate in numerous cross-cultural ministry experiences that will challenge you and help you develop cross-cultural ministry skills.
Spiritual Preparation
Through SAFARI, you’ll have the opportunity to gain some of the spiritual training you need for a missions career. Your relationship with God will be challenged in new ways by living in a cross-cultural environment.
You’ll also have the opportunity to develop relationships with IPHC World Missions staff, missionaries, and national church leaders. Through relationships you develop, cross-cultural ministry experiences, involvement in a local church, and personal times with God, you’ll have the opportunity to hear from God and grow in Him.
Academic Training
Through a partnership with Emmanuel College, Southwestern Christian University, and Holmes Bible College, SAFARI participants will complete an entire semester of classes while living in Krugersdorp, South Africa. Students can complete up to 18 hours of academic credit through SAFARI.
Dr. Roger Gorman, a veteran IPHC missionary, is the on-site director of SAFARI. Dr. Harold Dalton, assistant director of World Missions Ministries, directs the program. Dr. Gorman and Dr. Dalton will design a syllabus and monitor your academic progress through classroom time, assigned textbooks, additional reading, assignments, and exams. Several missionaries and national church leaders with graduate degrees and other visitors will be used as visiting faculty, lecturers, and resource persons. Grades will be assigned for each course and submitted to your college.
