IPHC > World Missions > Missions Updates > Quake Stuns Peru

It is with a heavy heart that I report on the devastating effects of the August 15th earthquake in Peru. The 8.0 earthquake and subsequent tremors stunned the residents across Peru’s southern coast with over 80,000 homes damaged or destroyed, 1,500 injured, and 500 deaths. Despite the foundational damage to the church building in Chincha, the pastor and church members are sleeping on the church floor. They feel safer sleeping in the church than in their crumbling homes. Many of the homes are now piles of rubble and require major repairs and reconstruction. The Peruvians are digging through the piles searching for personal belongings.

According to Superintendent Jorge Watanabe, who visited the area on Friday, the immediate need is to provide for the 40-plus children sleeping at the church. Rev. Watanabe says they need funds to deliver water, food, first-aid supplies, and blankets and coats as protection against the unseasonably cold weather.

Will you please assist us in offering aid to those affected by the earthquake? Please designate your tax-deductible contribution to PTP-Peru Quake. Also, remember to keep the Peruvian leadership in prayer as they struggle to meet the needs of the community.
